Scope note
Refers to the concept that a work of art must be experienced in its context or setting and that this knowledge of the work of art leads to a richer appreciation and understanding of it. Contextualism holds that not only literature, which is ordinarily appreciated contextually, but also the other arts, including nonrepresentational music and painting, should be experienced in this way. The opposite viewpoint of contextualism is isolationism.
