Scope note
A early 20th-century literary movement created in revolt against romanticism, specifically its optimism and supposed carelessness; the movement called for free verse and precise imagery. It is seen as the successor to French symbolism in the sense that it has an affinity to sculpture as symbolism has an affinity to music. Ezra Pound, inspired by the critical views of T.E. Hulme, devised its poetic ideals in about 1912.
