Scope note
Activity involving the execution of precise movements by a horse in response to its rider, where the horse has been trained in specific types of obedience and deportment. Horse and rider are expected to precisely and harmoniously execute a wide range of maneuvers, ranging from the simplest riding gaits to the most intricate and difficult airs and figures. Classical dressage is believed to be an ancient art that evolved from cavalry movements and training for the battlefield. From this, competitive dressage developed into a modern equestrian sport.
