Scope note
Means of communication using facial expressions and bodily movements, especially of the hands and arms, as opposed to acoustically conveyed sound patterns. Used when spoken communication is impossible or not desirable, for example between speakers of mutually unintelligible languages or when one or more parties is deaf.
