padma (lotus motif)
- Scope note
- As with the Egyptian lotus, Indian lotus motifs are also ancient and seen in Hindu iconography, but they gained widespread use in Buddhist iconography. The Indian motifs are based on the species of aquatic plant Nelumbo nucifera, having a large bright pink, white, or blue flower, in art seen in profile, in rosettes, and as medallions. Examples of use in Indic culture include as a pedestal to support figures of deities, as a molding, or as a capital. It is associated with the qualities of transcendence and grace, and appears as an emblem of Vishnu. Color variations impart various meanings.
