haint blue
- Scope note
- Any of various shades of blue used in historical dwellings in the Southern United States, originating in the dwellings of enslaved people on the properties; shades of blue were customarily used in Gullah culture to deter ghosts or other malevolent spirits. The tradition of using blue on the ceilings of porches and other architectural or furnishings elements became common in the South outside of the enslaved people's homes.
