Berber (culture or style)
- Scope note
- Refers to various peoples living across several countries in Northern Africa. It dates back to antiquity and appears in Arabic manuscripts by 900 AD. Some consider the term to be a European invention related to the term ‘barbarian’. While the term is still used by many people who self-identify as Berber, it is rapidly falling out of favour and more and more people now refer to themselves as ‘Amazigh.’
