Toyoga
- Scope note
- Refers to a painting genre during period of Japanese occupation in Taiwan. In Japanese, 'toyo' broadly refers to a geographical area that includes India, Taiwan, China, Korea and Japan while 'ga' means painting. The earliest official record of the term toyoga came with the Toyoga Section of the first ‘Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition’ held in 1927. While borrowing from a broad sweep of expressive forms, from Japanese nihonga and nanga to Chinese style ink painting, toyoga in general also incorporates native Taiwanese elements.
