Urnfield (Bronze Age culture or period)
- Scope note
- Refers to a Late Bronze Age culture evident by the 12th century BCE in east-central Europe and northern Italy, and spreading to the Ukraine, Sicily, Scandinavia, France, and the Iberian peninsula. It is named for the custom of placing the creamated bones of the deceased in urns, either within flat graves or round barrows. The culture is characterized by fortified settlements, distinctive pottery and metal forms, beaten-bronze armaments, and a slashing sword with flanged grips to protect the handle.
