- Generally, the style and culture of Moscow or of the former principality of Muscovy. May also be used specifically to refer to the style of architecture and art that developed first in the 13th century in Moscow. The architectural style merges Byzantine elements, Italian Renaissance details, and local Russian architectural fantasy, and is often characterized by domes set upon towers, rich color, and extravagant, complex details. A distinctive style in mural and icon painting also developed.
