Scope note
Type of cutout animation in which flat silhouettes, often highly intricate, cut out of paper or other stiff material are silhouetted with back lighting, minutely readjusted, and each position photographed with single frame exposures. The technique was first developed by Lotte Reiniger in Germany during the 1920s.
