kanshitsu

- Sculpture construction technique where cloth is soaked with lacquer and then draped over a mold that is removed once the lacquer has dried. The technique was introduced to Japan from China in the 8th century and is still used. For hollow dry lacquer technique, see "dakkatsu kanshitsu"; for wood-core dry lacquer technique, see "mokushin kanshitsu."
