Scope note
The beamhouse operation of treating unhaired hides or skins with a solution of fermented dog manure to remove undesirable constituents and impart a quality of softness and flexibility to the final leather. It is a similar process to bating, which involves pigeon or hen manure, but faster, as the solution is more powerful, and also possibly more damaging to the hides or skins.
