Scope note
Handicraft characterized by simple meshes of thread or cord joined by knots. It is of ancient origin and known in most cultures of the world. When produced under tension, it creates a stable fabric. In making the net, the thread is wound on an elongated shuttle or large needle; a mesh stick or gauge is used to maintain a uniform size of mesh. As the thread is looped round the gauge it is passed through a secondary loop to form a fisherman's knot or other non-slipping knot. The net can vary greatly in weight, shape, or size. It is used to make utilitarian objects, such as fishing nets, snares, and apparel, and as a foundation upon which to apply ornamentation, such as in the creation of lace or other textiles.
