soldering
- Scope note
- The process of joining two pieces of metal by inserting solder between them and applying heat, sometimes but not necessarily softening or melting the surfaces to be joined; usually carried out within a temperature range of 183 to 310 degrees Celsius, with an upper limit of 750 degrees Celsius. For the similar process carried out at temperatures ranging between 750 and 900 degrees Celsius, use "brazing." For the process of joining two pieces of metal that necessarily involves softening or melting the surfaces to be joined but not necessarily the insertion of filler metal, use "welding."
