brazing
- Scope note
- Refers to the process of joining two pieces of metal by inserting filler metal of very high melting point, such as hard solder, between them and applying heat, at temperatures ranging between 750 and 900 degrees Celsius; sometimes but not necessarily involves softening or melting the surfaces to be joined. For the similar process carried out at temperatures below 750 degrees Celsius, see "soldering." For the process of joining two pieces of metal that necessarily involves softening or melting the surfaces to be joined but not necessarily the insertion of filler metal, see "welding."
