Scope note
A branch of landscape archaeology which emerged during the 1980’s in the context of historical restoration. Garden archaeology investigates diverse questions, from studies of natural history and rural economy to recovery of ancient garden layouts. Excavations at Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens in Birmingham and at the Privy Garden of Hampton Court are examples of garden archaeology.
