Scope note
A compound of shellac, rosin, brick- and glass dust, often with other additives that is used to hold diamonds or other gemstones in place as they are cut. It softens when heat is applied but has a hard consistency when cooled. The composition is intended to lessen shock waves that might cause a stone to be shattered during a cleaving blow.
