- A whitish, malleable, metallic element from the alkaline earth group, occurring primarily as a sulfate (barite) and less often as a carbonate (witherite). Salts of barium are used as pigments in paints, ceramics, glass, plastics, and rubber, as fillers, as pesticides, and to produce the green color in fireworks.
