- Ceramics made of the distinctive type of clay found in the Arita area of Japan; first manufactured in the early 17th century. Characterized by early unglazed blue and white porcelain to colorful enamel ware perfected in the 1640s. Arita ware was produced in large quantities in the 17th century and mass-produced by the Meiji period (1868-1912).
