bows (chordophone components)
- Scope note
- Flexible sticks of wood, very rarely of metal or plastic, carrying stretched between the two ends a length of horsehair or other stringlike material which is used to brush against the strings of a chordophone, causing them to sound. Historically bows have been evenly curved, curved only at one end, or straight in the middle with both ends curved; modern Western bows typically have a concave curve.
