armatures (sculpture components)
- Scope note
- Assemblages of joined metal rods, tubes, wires or other materials such as wood that provides a structural framework for a sculpture and usually attaches to a base. Though generally internal, these may also include external supporting components that are eventually removed. In a lost-wax bronze, the armature is created to support the model, whether it is hollow or solid. In the case of a hollow cast, it will further help support the refractory mass of the core during the pour. Armatures may also be used in the assembly of a sculpture that was cast in parts, and in the repair of sculptures that have been structurally damaged. For the structural frames used to sustain or reinforce buildings or other structures, use "armatures (structural frames)."
