Scope note
Places where collections of wild or unusual animals are kept or exhibited in cages, particularly the early collections of emperors, kings, or other elite collectors, or 19th- and early 20th-century traveling exhibitions of caged animals. Traveling menageries were distinct from circuses in that the animals did not normally perform tricks.
