Smaller cities on the outskirts of larger metropolitan areas that are independent of the larger city's jurisdiction but dependent on its economic and social orbit. Satellite cities may be planned as such or they may result from ad hoc growth. For planned communities designed to be socially or economically independent of larger metropolitan areas use "new town."
