Scope note
Tools comprising thin pieces of material, such as metal, paper, cardboard, or stencil film, into which is cut, inscribed, or otherwise indicated a pattern, in such a way so that paint or ink applied to the surface of the stencil tool will produce a corresponding pattern on a second surface through the cut-outs. For large drawings into which holes are pricked in order to transfer designs to a large surface, prefer "cartoons (working drawings)"; for smaller drawings used for transferring designs, use "pounces (pricked drawings)."
