screw presses (coin presses)
- Scope note
- Early modern devices used to mint coins from metal blanks. These consisted of a large screw carrying the die in a holder mounted at its lower end. The screw was operated by workers pulling the weighted end of a long horizontal bar, which descended with great force to hit the blank on the bottom die.
