Early spinning machines having more than one spindle, enabling a person to spin a number of yarns simultaneously. The characteristic feature of these devices is the fact the the spindles are fixed upon a stationary frame, rather than being placed on a moving portion of the machine. For an earlier type of spinning machine, involving a hand- or foot-pedaled wheel and a single spindle, use "spinning wheels."
