Scope note
Carving knives manufactured by Northeast Native Americans; has origins in pre-contact knives fashioned from beaver or porcupine teeth. After European contact, Native carvers used metal blades. Distinctive by their elaborately carved, curving handles, often terminating in a figurative form such as ferns or hands.
