Scope note
An early form of bicycle that was driven directly by pedaling cranks on the front wheel axle, rather than with a chain drive. The front and rear wheels were disproportionate in size to increase the distance covered for each turn of the cranks, and the rider sat almost directly over the large front wheel. Spokes allowed wheels ranging from 40 to 60 inches in diameter.
