knitting (needlework)
- Scope note
- Refers to handmade works or material created by interlacing loops of a long or continuous piece of yarn or thread by means of two needles; various types of loops or stitches are used to create patterns or designs. Some forms of knitting are made by using circular needles or more than two needles. Loops running lengthwise are called wales; those running crosswise are called courses. Knitting is typically formed into apparel, bedspreads, rugs, or other household articles. The term may also refer to knitted fabrics that are constructed by hand or by machine, comprising an interlocking series of loops made from one or more yarns, with each row of loops caught into the preceding row.
