hair wreaths (visual works)
- Scope note
- Decorative works using human hair, sometimes animal hair of pets, formed into designs forming a horseshoe-shaped wreath that was typically placed on a silk or velvet background and framed. Hair wreaths were often memorials using the hair of one or more deceased family members. The arms of the horseshoe were placed at the top of the design, where additional hair from new donors could be placed over time, and symbolizing arms pointed heavenward. This craft was popular during the Victorian period.
