polar charts
- Scope note
- Refers to maps that depict a polar projection, which is an azimuthal projection drawn to show Arctic or Antarctic areas. Such a projection is based on a plane perpendicular to the Earth's axis in contact with the North or South Pole, and is limited to around 10 or 15 degrees from the poles. Parallels of latitude are depicted as concentric circles and meridians are radiating straight lines.
