Greek Orthodox
- Scope note
- Body of several self-governing churches in Greece and elsewhere within the larger communion of Orthodox Eastern Christianity. The member communities have no obedience to a central authority: they conform in general to the liturgy and discipline of the Byzantine Rite, but look to their respective Holy Synods in their home countries for governing authority and direction. They have a liturgy traditionally conducted in Koine Greek, the original language of the New Testament, and they share a common Greek cultural tradition. The current territory of these churches covers the Eastern Mediterranean region that was formerly part of the Byzantine Empire, as well as newer churches established throughout the world.
