Anabaptism
- Scope note
- Any of the movements stemming from the more radical elements of the 16th-century Reformation that insisted that only adult baptism is valid and that true Christians should not hold government office, use force, or bear arms. Followers of these movements, also known as Rebaptizers, emphasize strict church discipline, adherence to scripture, and the separation of church and state. Anabaptists frequently suffered persecution as a result of their criticism of government; they are often considered the forerunners of the Baptists.
