- Historical unit of measurement meaning a "thumb"; used in France and other places, prior to the adoption of the metric system in the late 18th century. French units of measurement were based on the Carolingian system, in turn were based on ancient Roman measures. Equal to 12 lignes in the old French measurement system. In modern systems, equal to around 27.07 mm or 1.066 inches.
