Scope note
Metric units of capacity equal to 1,000 cubic centimeters, which is 1 cubic decimeter or around 1.75 pints; a liter is represented by a cube having an edge measuring 1/10 of a mete. From 1901 to 1964, a liter was temporarily redefined as the volume of a kilogramme of water under specified conditions, equal to approximately 1.000,028 cubic decimeters.
