A style inspired by American Impressionists and unique to Pennsylvania and surrounding areas.The Pennsylvania Impressionists painted the natural beauty of the local countryside around the turn of the century. These artists focused less on optics and ephemeral light effects than their French counterparts but utilized similar brushwork to express an immediacy and expressive urgency in their depictions of nature. The Pennsylvania Impressionist artists were united by their connections to the vibrant New Hope area of Pennsylvania. In the early 20th century artists of diverse backgrounds were attracted to Bucks County for its rural landscape and proximity to Philadelphia. Many artists studied and taught with one another at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now the Moore College of Art and Design).
