'85 New Wave
- Scope note
- An artistic phenomenon in China mainly happening in 1985 and 1986 and lasting in some form until the ‘China/Avant-Garde: China Modern Art Exhibition’ in 1989. Young artists across China formed numerous artistic groups and organised various exhibitions of experimental art, including a considerable amount of performance art. They shared a concern for the individual in the context of Chinese society, a belief in freedom of creative expression, and a commitment to conceptual and formal renewal. ’85 New Wave is widely considered a significant breakthrough in modern Chinese art history.
