Scope note
Refers to the period and style of art that developed during the rise of the Kamakura shogunate from 1185-1333. This period saw the rise of the provincial warrior class to a position political power, the establishment of a military government, the emergence of new sects of Buddhism and the spread of that religion from the aristocracy to the common people. In the arts, the style is characterized by dramatic, energetic wood figure sculptures, scrolls showing battles, and the rise of the Zenshuyo and Tenjinkuyo styles of architecture.
