Scope note
Refers to the Japanese period and style of art that developed during the rise of the Asikaga shogunate (1338-1573). Although political unrest resulted from the Onin War (1467-1477), the period saw the development of the tea ceremony, flower arranging, the rise of Chinese influenced monochrome painting, and intricate laquer carvings. In architecture, the style is characterized by simple and austere structures, and the use of large landscape gardens designed after famous paintings.
