Scope note
Denotes the culture or styles of locally born persons in Southeast Asia who are descendants of marital unions between native-born people and foreigners. Typically refers to the Peranakan communities in Southeast Asia and their hybrid cultures, which became well established by the 19th century. The traditional heartland of Peranakans is said to be present-day Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. In Singapore and Malaysia, the Peranakan males are called Baba and the females, Nyonya. The Peranakan communities may include the Peranakan Chinese, who are also known as Straits Chinese, Pashu (in Myanmar), Chetti Melaka and Jawi Peranakan amongst others.
