- Refers to the period from the founding of the Seleucid empire by Seleuckos I Nikator in 311 BCE until its defeat by the Romans in 64 BCE, during which the Seleucid dynasty ruled much of the Near East. The art of the period reflected the ethnic and regional diversity of the empire characterized by a mixture of mainstream Hellenism and traditional Mesopotamian culture.
