Palaeologan
- Scope note
- Refers to the revival of the Byzantine style in Byzantium and eastern Europe under the Palaeologue dynasty (1261-1453). The style differs from earlier styles in sacrificing formality for greater freedom, and is noted for a preference for wall paintings to mosaics, more complex compositions that often cover entire walls, and a change in iconography to often prefer themes from the Apocryphal Gospels.
