- Refers to the ancient Roman emperors from the time of Augustus Caesar (born 63 BCE) to the fall of Constantinople. The term is taken from the surname of the Roman dictator Caius Julius Caesar, and was transferred as a title to succeeding emperors. From the time of Hadrian (died 138 CE) it was also used as a title of the heir-presumptive of the emperor.
