Scope note
Institutions devoted to the instruction of adults. Types of lyceums include specific literary institutions established in the early 19th century and those established later to provide popular lectures on literary and scientific subjects, public discussions, concerts, and other activities for furthering general education. In some nations, the term is used for universities or colleges. The term is derived from the proper name of a garden with covered walks in Athens where Aristotle taught philosophy.
