- Refers to the large round, juicy, single-seeded fruits of a smallish tree belonging to the genus Prunus persica, believed to have originated in China, and cultivated in warmer climates throughout the world. The fruit has yellow or whitish flesh, a delicate aroma, and a skin that is either velvety (peaches) or smooth (nectarines) in different cultivars. Peaches are known in for the many associated folk tales and traditions, including that it was said to be consumed by the immortals, conferring longevity on all who ate them.
