poppy-seed oil
- Scope note
- Oil obtained from the seeds of the opium poppy, Papaver somniferum. When cold pressed, it is a naturally, colorless, transparent oil used as a drying oil, sometimes used as an additive to linseed-oil colors. Hot pressed oil is reddish. It produces a soft, rubbery paint film with a long wet-in-wet work time that was popular with Impressionist painters. Thick layers of poppy oil paint films tend to wrinkle and crack on aging.
