Refers to perspective depicted by using a single vanishing point. The technique was codified by the Renaissance artist and theoretician, Leon Battista Alberti, who described a visual pyramid, the vertex of which is in the viewer's eye. The illusion of recession into space is produced by parallel lines converging at one vanishing point, which was usually at or near the center of the composition and was at that time called the "centric point." Alberti described how to determine the correct intervals for horizontal lines at progressively deeper positions in space, and how to draw objects and figures to the correct scale for their position in space.
