overcasting (bookbinding stitching)

- Bookbinding stitching technique in which stitches pass close to and over the binding edges, creating gatherings which are then sewn all along. In addition to sewing through the fold, the first and last signatures of a book are overcast to strengthen them against the volume's opening and closing.
