Scope note
Technique of mosaic making, first seen in ancient Greece and considered the most desired method for many centuries. Characterized by the use of very small cubes of uniform size of stone or glass used to form very detailed images or patterns, and having outlines surrounding elements of the composition. For a similar technique using larger tesserae and not employing outlines, which was considered inferior in ancient times but became standard in the Middle Ages, use "opus tessellatum."
